CHAPTER 5

The bike drove towards him at speed. Josh leapt to the side, anger searing through his veins. Another bike hurtled towards him; he was ready this time. He stuck out an arm and knocked the rider off. He landed with a thump on his back and writhed around in pain. Josh thought about pouncing on the bugger and knocking seven bells out of him, but the other bikes kept coming at him, one after the other, each of the riders shouting in his face and kicking out as they passed.

“Did Daddy kill himself? Why? Because he was fed up with you and cry baby Ben?” One of the youths shouted.

Josh glared at him. Clenched his fist and waited for the opportunity for him to take the lad out. He didn’t know the boys, but he had an inkling they were the ones from school who had made his life hell the previous year. But tonight, they were well disguised, dressed all in black and wearing clown masks.

He darted towards the boy still lying on the ground, desperate to get a look at the shithead, but another member of the gang realised what he was up to and drove at him, veering off to the right at the last minute. Josh’s heart felt like it was on the verge of erupting from his chest. His breathing had become erratic as the anger built within him. He didn’t care if he got hurt, all he wanted to do was get revenge for what these bastards had done to his younger brother.

“Daddy come to visit you, has he? From the afterlife, to check how your pathetic brother is doing?”

“I’ll get you for hurting him. You’re a bunch of cowards. Why didn’t you come after me? Too scared, were you?”

“Do we seem scared to you, shit for brains?” One of the bikes came up behind him, and the thug kicked him in the back.

Josh fell face-first into a puddle beside the grassy patch nearby. Fearing what the thugs would do once he was lying defenceless on the ground, he bounced to his feet. His fists raised. “Think you can scare me, think again, arseholes.”

There were five bikes in total. The riders all laughed and pedalled off. Josh took off, ran back to his aunt’s house, constantly peering over his shoulder.

The second he entered the house, she was ready for him. He got whacked on the arm, hadn’t seen the large saucepan coming at him until the last moment. It was aimed at his head, but his raised arm took the brunt of the force.

“Where the fuck have you been?” the evil bitch, as he preferred to call her, screamed at him.

“You know where I’ve been, at the hospital with my brother.”

“I expected you home hours ago. Look at the state of you.”

“I got set upon by a group of kids, the same ones who put Ben in hospital.”

“How do you know that?” his aunt bellowed, getting right in his face.

His hands clenched and unclenched beside him.
